Our Design Process

We consult with you every step of the way during the design and development of your new website to ensure that the end product is something you can be really proud of. The development of your new website is very much a two way process and typically consists of the following phases. Click on the heading to read more about each phase.

1. Initial Consultation

Every website design project is different and that’s why we offer a free, no obligation consultation to discuss your requirements and explain what we do, how we can help and to give you an indication of how much it is going to cost. We like to work as a partnership with our clients and so we take time to understand you and your business and, of course, your customers and target audience. If you already have a website, at this point we can also produce a free report on how we feel it could be improved.

2. Quote

Once we have discussed your requirements and gained a full understanding of exactly how we can help you we will create a no obligation quote to give you a clear indication of how much it will cost. Our quotes usually consist of a short document summarising the initial consultation, outlining how we intend to develop your website, the timescales involved and explaining specific points for consideration, if required. In most cases, the price you are quoted is the price you will pay unless otherwise discussed and noted in the quote document.

3. Design

After the price has been agreed and deposit paid the work begins. At this point we start on the design work, producing concepts for your website or logo design. These design concepts are then sent to you for your feedback with the aim of choosing the direction of the design going forward. Nothing is every fixed in stone and we go through an iterative process, working with you to refine the design until you are totally happy with it. During this stage we will also spend more time researching your business and target audience, if required, to make sure we get the design work spot on.

4. Development

When the design has been agreed and signed off by yourself we then start on the development work. For a website this would be creating HTML templates from your design reading to build your website. We also work with you to gather together the content for the site, both textual and pictorial. The final stage of this process is to combine the HTML templates with your content to produce your webpages ready for launch. If you have opted for a content management system, for example, this is when we will set up the system and customise it to your requirements.

5. Testing & Approval

The final stage in the build process is to fully test the new website, checking for errors and spelling mistakes as well as ensuring your new website will display correctly in all browsers and on all computer platforms. This means your website will reach the widest possible audience. At the same time we give you access to the finished site so you can also check through the design, pages and content to make sure everything is exactly as initially discussed and agreed. If we haven’t done so already, we then set up your domain name, web hosting and email ready for launch.

6. Launch & Training

Your new website is now ready to launch to the world! We can work with you to combine the launch with other publicity you arrange or go for a more subtle approach. We set up visitor statistics on your new website so we can monitor visitors and how your website is being used. We also submit your website to the major search engines like Google and Bing as well as other sites, such as online directories, where appropriate. We will also arrange training, if required, to ensure you are happy with managing your new website if, for example, you opted for a content management system.

7. On-going Support

Once your website goes live our relationship doesn’t end there. We monitor all new websites for 3 months after launch to make sure they are performing as expected and to iron out any glitches, should there be any. We also monitor how your website is being ranked in the search engines and if there are any tweaks that can be made to improve things then we will do this. In addition, once your website is live you have access to our support system for submitting problem reports/support request and, of course, you can call or email us at any time!

Timescales

Every website design project is different and so it is very difficult to give definite timescales without talking to you first about your needs and requirements. But, to give you an idea, based on our experience here are some typical (and realistic!) timescales for different types of web design project:

  • 1 Page Website Starter Pack – 1-2 weeks
  • 5 Page Website Starter Pack – 2-3 weeks
  • 5 Page Custom Brochure Website – 3-5 weeks
  • Content Management System – 4-6 weeks
  • E-commerce System – 5-8 weeks

Obviously, if you have particularly stringent deadlines then we will work with you to plan the project to ensure that your firm deadline is met however we generally find that website design projects have an element of flexibility – afterall, great websites take time to craft!
